We're getting there

I still have tons to do but things are coming together and in no time we'll be married! It's funny, we're going to be headed to the Dominican Republic in November and I don't think I'll have a new passport by then (since they take forever to make new passports) so do I wait to get my name changed? I'm sure I can find that out really easily if I look online, so when I do I'll report back.

Ok, reporting back. As long as your tickets match your passport (both of mine will be in my maiden name for that trip) you're okay. Because they don't check additional identification.

I bought some crest whitestrips to touch up my smile. I always use the cheapest kit and this time I sprang for the premium (and I got 2 for the price of one, $30). I've never had my teeth professionally whitened and the whitestrips do a good job. I don't like doing them twice a day, so my 7 day kit may take me longer. And I'm not sure what to do with the other kit unless Garrett decides he wants to try it. So, if you want it, and he doesn't, we'll make that happen.

Working out every day has been going well so far. Garrett said my arms look muscular which is exciting. Especially since I only use 5 pound dumbells. I cut out french fries/fried things and fatty desserts (I did have some much needed TCBY last night) a few weeks ago and I think that plus the running is doing its job. I've also been using jergen's skin firming lotion which uses the magical powers of seaweed to get rid of cellulite. I'm not sure how much it works, since I've been trying to get rid of the cellulite by exercising too, but I've been using it faithfully for a few weeks and either way I'm pleased.

In other news, I'm meeting with Bryan Johnson of A Bryan Photo today to talk business. I attended their workshop a few months ago and it was so motivational and fun! And now that I'm really out there on my own in the real world I can really put it all to practice. It's just insanely scary and growing up around my self-employed parents has me wary of the responsibility involved. Garrett's dad owns his own business as well so maybe we're both meant for it genetically. As long as I'm not meant to take over newspapers, we're good to go.

What's up in your world?

Creative Reply Card ideas...?

image from flickr

I feel like I've seen all kinds of creative reply card wording around the web and that I just failed to bookmark it or remember it. So perhaps you can help me.

I loathe the standard "will attend/will not attend"
and I'm not crazy about "accepts with pleasure/declines with regret"
"joyfully accepts/regretfully declines" is slightly better

Garrett will veto anything he deems lame but I saw one that said
_in person
_in spirit
and that was getting there.

I've seen something else that said something to the effect of:
_I'll be there!
_Celebrating from afar/elsewhere

So come on all you creative thinkers. I'm usually really good with puns and the like, but that'll probably run me into the lame category. And I do want to maintain class. Although, anything looks classy when letterpressed, right?

WOW I found an awful christmas one on verseit.com:
__ Yule bet! We'll be there!
__ Sorry, we have to bough out.

And I'm just not sure about the "will be there with bells on"

how about "please accept the presence of our presents instead" hahaha only kidding.

maybe it should say "let us eat cake!" for a yes. I really want a sign that says let them eat cake on our cake table. it shall be done.

I know we can't but...

Budgeting for a wedding reception would be a lot easier if we could ask questions on the reply card like they do at the doctor's office:

Please circle one for the following:

do you consume alcoholic beverages?
yes/no

if yes, how many alcoholic beverages do you consume in a night, on average, when out (say, to a wedding perhaps?)
one/two/three to four/ too many to count

for those who have been there, how did you estimate your food and drink budgets (if you had an open bar and/or hors d'oeuvres)?

My DIY Veil!

Hoorah! I finally finished my birdcage veil. It's small because I didn't want anything over my whole head and I didn't want it to come down too far over my face either. I spent a lot of time with pieces of the netting, pinning them to my head with bobbypins and asking Garrett what he thought to make sure he wouldn't hate it (because I want the person I'm marrying to like the way I look, afterall). I goofed when I ordered the netting off of ebay and got ivory instead of white (my dress is white) so I decided to add a white accent to it. hence the white flower, which I made with the help of a tutorial featured on EAD. I bought some feathers from a hobby lobby for maybe $2? And I have a lot of them left over. I used silky liner fabric for the flower because it was cheap and I liked the texture. That was $2 or so and I have a lot of it left over as well. The netting was about $15 for 3 yards. I only used about 20 or so inches, though I cut two other pieces first that were shorter and changed my mind. I bought some combs to attach it to, and ended up using one. I sewed the flower to it first, then the netting (the more difficult part) and then stuck the feathers in.

I secured it with gorilla glue (professional, I know) and the underneath looks like a crazy mess but it works and I really like it. I had to use a bobby pin to pin down the part closest to my ear so it wouldn't stick up, but it'll be simple the day of and I won't be worried about placement because the rest of it is in place. I think it was a rewarding process, but I won't be selling veils any time soon. I'd be willing to help people do theirs, but I'd want them to have a part in it.

So, what do you think?

I love this...

I'm a little obsessed with statistics (not the math part, just the results) and I really like seeing how many people are viewing my site, from what part of the world, and how they got here. I was looking at my keyword searches and someone found me by typing in "love pinch blonde bride." Okay, so they probably weren't searching for me, and I could be oblivious to 'love pinch' having some other meaning, but it sounds pretty cute.

I have lots to post about and I've just been lazy! But, things are coming together and I should have something exciting for you in about 3-4 weeks.

Around the web

I like it when my favorite blogs post things they've found around the web, since they stalk some blogs that I don't. So, in case you are new to blog stalking and haven't seen these yet, here you go...

found via Cup of Jo, this is a designer, who decided for a whole year to wear just one dress, with different accessories. I think I'd get sick of wearing a dress everyday, sometimes I just need pants, but she's pulling it off pretty well. It's called The Uniform Project
and it's raising money for education related expenses for kids in slums in India. People can donate accessories for the project or money. I approve.

We're going to San Francisco in August and I would so love a framed copy of something like this. Or I wish my hands were skilled enough to do that with an exacto knife. whatever. All I'm saying, is that this looks like an awesome gift for someone even vaguely artsy who is getting married. Or someone with a font fetish.

ranunculus wedding invitation, via Pink Lily Press

I brought this in with me as inspiration for our wedding invites (can't wait to see a proof & go help crank out a few on a letterpress!!) since I'm hoping to have ranunculus at our reception (unless fifty flowers fails me). I really love the stylized look, especially the one that's just an outline. More on our invites as things progress. But Jenny from  Press Charming
has convinced me to do envelope liners. I know, I'm crazy! But they will be splendid!

gnomes, from a print a day

I love gnomes. So much. But PLEASE don't send me a bunch of gnome stuff for every holiday until I die. I learned after I told people that I liked turtles, that it goes too far really quick. Gnome t-shirts? Okay, I don't have any of those. Garden gnomes? I'm without a yard, so let's keep that to a minimum. Cute little cupcake gnomes? Now we're getting somewhere.

a ring to make sure you don't forget what day you need to do, whatever it is you need to do. like, get married. (it's days of the week plus a 2 digit number, one with 4 digits would be good for anniversary forgetters). Garrett asked if I'd kill him if he forgot our anniversary. I said no. But, I'm wondering if he would even be able to forget since I talk about my birthday nonstop the month before, and I'm pretty sure I'd be informing him of which anniversary is each year. (I'm hoping for our paper anniversary we can buy plane tickets to Europe for an anniversary-moon since we're putting off our Iceland-Paris-Belgium adventure until we can for sure afford it).

Napkin folding, next stop on the crazy train.

cute little roll baskets! I should practice making these just to become a more awesome person.

^these are the napkins I was thinking about... maybe I can alternate by table? Or just do one color. they're 83¢ each if I get 72 or more.

I have this strange desire to buy cloth napkins for our reception and fold them in some fancy way to decorate our tables. I tried out the bishop's hat and think it turned out okay. I could also think about the rose. Of course, I'd probably be doing this the day of my wedding. But that's okay, because if all works out Garrett & I will be married before October 3rd and that day will just be a nice relaxing party. Relaxing and party don't fit too well. Whatever. So, do you like the napkins? Are you impressed by fancy napkins? And which option do you prefer?

this last one is the rose again, but made with paper. I think I might prefer the look of these, and paper napkins seem like they'd be easier to fold and a lot cheaper! Eh?

Running in the morning for beginners

It seems like these days everyone runs. Much like how everyone is a photographer. And a musician. And a writer. You know. But anyway, I'm going to make the assumption that based on the number of people I know that despise running, not everyone does it. And, I have this vague sense of wanting people I know & like to run (if for nothing else, my selfish desire to have people to run with), much like someone who likes music wants other people to hear their favorite albums, even if it will cause them great pain. It's good to know I'm still awesome at analogies.

Okay, so, with the decrease in time till I'll be in a wedding dress, I felt a sudden panic to exercise. I decided to start running on my own, in the mornings again, and I have a lot of free time lately and no car so there isn't much else to do.

In case you do not live in the southern US (more specifically eastern), you may be unaware of how hot summer is, and you might not know about humidity and how much hotter that makes, say, central Alabama, than any desert anywhere. There is a special trick to avoiding said heat, which is mind-numbing and torturous, and deadly for runners. Wake up before you thought was humanly possible, at the slightest hint of sunrise, and run then.

Outline for why you would do such a thing:

I. Avoiding the heat
a. it is less hot before the sun has properly risen.
-When Garrett and I had just met, in Natchez, I was waking up at 6:30 to go run since we had to leave for the site by 7:30. Until the sun stopped rising that early, it was really pleasant, I could run along the mississippi river, get back, shower, and then head out to dig in the heat the rest of the day. Now I get up between 6:30 and 7:30 (naturally, without an alarm) and it's not usually too hot. By 8 it's getting there. By 10 it is absolutely unbearable.
b. exercise makes you feel even hotter than you would just being outside. so take advantage of cooler temperatures, it's worth it...
II. You can psyche yourself out.
a. Your body is thinking: what are you thinking waking up this early? and is too preoccupied to prevent you from going out and exerting yourself. This process of fooling yourself also makes forming a habit of exercise easier. You are too tired to even argue with yourself about whether or not you should go running, and before you know if you've got your shoes on and you're ready to go.
III. Why run outside?
a. if you live in a nice area, running outside gives you a chance for variety and scenery, which is usually lacking in a gym.
b. running outside includes breezes, birds chirping, squirrels, the smell of flowers or bakeries, seeing other people running and saying hello...
-saying hello to people when I run is a nice addition to my morning. It re-instills the feelings that people are good, and nice, and want good things to happen to you.
-If you really hate other people, you could still say hello and the inevitable one or two people who won't nod or say anything back can justify your feelings of disdain toward the human race. Or, you can not say hello and be that person for us chipper folks.
c. I'm more able to forget what I'm doing when I'm running outside instead of on a treadmill. When I run outside I can just think. On a treadmill I'm obsessed with how fast I'm going, how much longer I have to run, how much I've already run. It makes it take forever.
d. you don't have to pay for it, get in the car and drive to it (in most cases), or feel self conscious about other people like you do at the gym.
e. Vitamin D and fresh air.
IV. Fewer people
a. when you wake up really early, there aren't many people out. Which means less traffic and fewer people in general. Which makes you feel more like you are in on something that everyone else isn't. Like it's exclusive and just for you.
V. This is a small, seemingly silly thing, but it has caused me problems more than once on mid afternoon races... when you wake up in the morning, you generally need to go to the bathroom. since you'll go running right away, your risk of needing to go while you're running and bouncing your body around, which is really uncomfortable.

Preparing to run:
1. If you aren't a runner, you probably have an aversion to doing so. I could go on about health benefits and the like, but really I'd say that it's not as hard as you think. And if distance is the part you can't imagine, you can start out small and work up as that distance becomes easy. Once you've run three miles before it's not really hard to get back to, even if you are out of shape. And you don't have to set a goal of running a marathon or keep increasing the amount. You should be applauded if you manage to keep up a routine of running 20-30 minutes everyday. I say everyday because the way I work, if I only run a few days a week it makes it so much easier to stop running. Routines aren't weekly for me, they are daily.
2. one of my xc coaches in high school told us you should dress as if the temp was going to be 20 degrees warmer than it is. Less helpful in the summer when you can't really take more clothes off. As far as dressing, you know the basics, materials that breathe, light colors when it's hot out, no long pants or shirts in the summer unless you are insane...
3. If you have an old pair of shoes, even if you hardly ever used them, you might think about investing in a new pair. Rubber gets old, and you should change shoes every 300-500 miles. Plus, you can buy shoes specific to the kind of running you'll be doing (trail, distance, road, etc.) and to your feet (specialty running stores can tell you if you over or under pronate and can help reduce risk of sprained ankles or just make your run more comfortable). I always get excited when I have a new pair of shoes. It makes me feel faster and better. Probably a placebo, but worth it. I had the same effect from a B vitamin before a race once. Who knows.

I'm sure a lot of you found this completely useless but I felt amused on my run this morning. And I am incredibly excited about maybe going to San Francisco in August. Hurray!

Cake Buffet

cake buffet from snippet & ink

I feel the need to say "I love you like a fat kid loves cake," and since I don't think I can have a placard with that on our dessert table...I'm getting it out of my system now. Garrett and I had talked a little bit about cakes and we'd both decided that we didn't want anything super fancy. Garrett's a minimalist (unless you see our bookshelves) and I prefer simple to really ornate. I like the look of fondant but not the taste. I love buttercream. I like clean, simple, but not perfect. And finding a vintage cake topper with a blonde bride and brunette groom that I liked was just not going to happen. I have little patience for ebay. So, we talked about doing a really simple cake. Something 3 tier or thereabouts, simple white frosting, bam.

But I'm sure some of you other brides can relate... Garrett's not crazy about making decisions wedding things. I was trying to find a fabric in our color scheme at a fabric store that was going out of business and I drove Garrett crazy. I couldn't make up my mind at all and wandered around like I do in grocery stores, aisle after aisle. I ended up going home with nothing. And the store wasn't really close by. Oops! Even though Garrett loves cake, the idea of going to taste testings and talking price and picking something out...it's exhausting. I'd considered making my own cake before, like some other bride bloggers I've seen, decided I had lost my mind, and moved on. But the more I see the whole "cake buffet" idea, the more I think it could work for us. My sister loves baking. One of Garrett's cousins used to run a bakery and has lots of supplies (plus, her daughter Megan, who reads my blog and is now a good friend of mine, has offered to maybe come down early to help me with things like flowers or cakes). Linden, one of my bridesmaids, has offered up some delicious recipe of her grandma's... We might be in business. I've made a few mean pound cakes in my day and if nothing else I think I could manage that.

Plus, we're looking at our reception as a party at this point. We're not going to be stressing out the day of and I don't think we'll be heading off for a honeymoon the next day or anything, so I just want to have fun!

this one is from a navy & yellow wedding (our colors!) that I love! It was featured in Southern Weddings' blog and the photographer is Sarah Maren. I like that they had a candy buffet on the ends of the cake buffet.

So from you, what are your favorite kinds of cake, do you have any favorite recipes (for frosting too!), what would you be most excited to see at a cake buffet? Oh, and any tips on petit fours? Garrett loves them.

Some thoughts of mine: strawberry cake, a butter cake, some kind of chocolate (maybe mousse-ish?), lemon?, pound cake, linden's sour cream cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting...

I've got some personal issues to deal with, so be prepared for a slow down in posts. I'll try not to be away for too long.
